Final Images: Hillhurst

Here are the final images from the home we recently completed close to downtown Calgary, a stunning infill on a 50' wide lot, hope you enjoy!

{foyer}
This is a center hall design with the media room off to the right when you enter through the custom front door and the dining room to the left.

{entry & dining room}
 The clients wanted definition between the front foyer and the back portion of the home, instead of using the double French doors that were drawn on the plans we went with an oak stained opening which gives them the separation they were wanting. The image on the right is of the butlers pantry that is tucked in nicely between he dining room & the kitchen.

 {kitchen}
We had a nasty beam that we had to work around in the kitchen, our amazing finishing carpenter did a fantastic job concealing it with shaker panels and crown molding. Love the tones and feelings that this space has!

 {great room}
 The great room is right across from the kitchen, a modern sleek style 60" fireplace was used with natural stone surround and built-ins on each side.

{his & hers offices}
 This is the 'Hers' office that is next to the kitchen and across from the kitchen nook, it will act as a toy/play room while the little ones are still little.

'His' office it located at the back of the home and features custom oak cabinetry, dark & manly, just they way he wanted it.

 {mud room}
 Love this mud room! While I prefer the open lockers the clients wanted to be able to hide the mess. We took advantaged of the taller ceilings and have extended the cabinets to accommodate 2 large baskets above each unit.

{ensuite}
This ensuite design was small and compact but we still have a lot of style going on in the space. The walls surround the tub are split face slate and give the 'spa feel' the client was looking for. They loved the industrial pendants that I hung above my boys vanity so we incorporated a similar look here with pendants from Restoration Hardware. The shower was just stunning, in the image is comes off a bit more grey than it actually was, it has more of a creamy tone to.

{laundry room}
The washer & dryer were coming with the clients when they moved in so those holes under the stained counter are for them. She really fell in love with my green laundry room but this was connected to the ensuite, so we had to ensure that the colors worked together. We ended up continuing the floor tile and then opted for a fun green on the wall, still bright & happy...what you need in a laundry room!

 {main bath 1}
This is for the girls, so imagine injections of pink once they get settled. We also ordered my beloved Cole & Sons woods paper...but since my installer is on a beach till April that is having to wait. We went with the same floor design I have in my boys bath and incorporated the black pencil liners to the tub surround (you can see that in the reflection from the mirror).
{girls room}
Hey HOT LIPS, that is what the color is called, and.i.love.it. I used the same color in my nieces nursery back in Missouri (which we will finish this summer). The Ikea pendant cast fun shadows that will let the little minds wonder & create.

There are a few more images on on Houzz that you can see HERE. Hope you enjoyed this latest project, up next is Altadore I! BTW, great giveaway coming your way tomorrow...stay tuned! Mel xo

Hood-less kitchen

Many times when I am design a kitchen the hood detail tends to take center stage and is the focal point of the space. With Altadore II underway the detailed design has begun and I have decided to make the kitchen still awesomeballs but more streamlined in one way...with no HEY LOOK AT ME hood detail. Here are some fab examples of what I refer to as the hood-less kitchen...

via Chris Barrett

via Joris Van Apers

 via Lindsay Reid | Vincent van Duysen

While there will not be a big dramatic hood I know the stove area will still be stunning. The kitchen will have elements of marble, Caesarstone, dark grey & off white cabinets (maybe black, haven't decided yet), along with injections of wood...it is going to be a showstopper. Here are a few elements that I have confirmed for the space. You'll notice similar tones to Altadore I but it will be less industrial & more traditional...

 I have 2 weeks to nail down all of the selections and materials so stay tuned for more peeks into this one! Oh, and Hillhurst final images coming to you Wednesday, be sure to pop back over and see our latest project! Mel xo

images by photo bliss

Yeah, so I have a TON more to share but you will just have to wait until I have the time and properly go through them and discuss them with you. Next week I promise. ;)

Yesterday I got a sweet little note from a wonderful blogger friend (that I CAN'T wait to meet in person), Tracey Ayton, photographer extraordinaire! She was tagged and had then decided to tag myself and 10 other bloggers, so here you go!

1. What is your favorite all time song?
Beast of Burden by the Rolling Stones
2. Do you prefer to cook or bake?
Hard one...I think I would have to pick cooking, but I really love baking too! This is the same a picking a favorite child, ha!
3. What is your favorite flower?
 Ranunculus by far, I wish I could have an endless supply in my home.

4. Tell me the coolest store in the world that you know of so that I can one day go visit it.
 I think that is going to have to go to my favorite show store that I used to frequent weekly when I lived in NYC, Otto Tootsi Plohound, on 5th Ave between 20th & 21st. The most amazing selection of shoes ever...at least that was the case way back in the day.

5. What was your biggest accomplishment in 2011?
Finishing our new home without divorcing my husband.

6. What inspires you most?
My goals, I have a list up in my office and look at them every single day, I know what I want to accomplish professionally and seeing them keeps me motivated and inspired to keep pushing the envelope.

I just booked flights for myself & Eric from Moth Designs to head to NYC in May for Blog Fest 2012, can't wait!!

Honestly, to keep track of my thoughts and ideas, I am a scatterbrain and blogging has helped me stay a bit more organized.

Dark for sure, in fact Green & Blacks dark chocolate & cherry, yummy goodness.

FAB hardware...

With Altadore I getting close to the lock out stage I need, as in, should have been done a month ago, select my hardware for this home. I have been hooked up on this item from Richelieu since I saw it in the catalog a few months ago, but $22 PER item (my cost) was just too far over budget.
Richelieu 1414288BB

So I sent a text & numerous emails to my amazing friend Erica with some options that I was looking at, while complaining that I couldn't have the ones above. Being the great girl that she is she suggest Lee Valley for some hardware. As I slap my head on my forehead I wonder why the heck I didn't consider that as a source before. Take a look at all of the amazing options I found (from $2 to $10 each!!)...

Bridge Hardware | Utility Handles | Recess Suite

Very happy with the selections, but then again if you read yesterdays post you know that I am a bit overjoyed with this house as a whole. I am starting the planing for Altadore II since the framing is coming to a close on that home, here is a little peek into some of the items making its way into one of the bathrooms...

As you can see from this it is going to be very different from Altadore I, still modern elements but with a bit more of a traditional twist. Fun, fun, fun!!! Oh, and we also found out yesterday that we, as in Veranda Estate Homes, is a finalist in 2 different categories for the 2011 Sam Awards. This is a huge honor and we are very excited about it as it is our first time entering. So on that note, have a wonderful Wednesday!! Mel xo

Project Updates: Altadore I

Come on in and let me share with you my latest project that I am dying over, I have some serious LOVE for this home!!!! It is awesomeballs if I do say so myself, hope you love it as much as I do (and keep in mind these are construction pics and do not fully represent the awesomeness that is to come)...

{front room}
This is the first room you see in this home and I wanted something to grab you. I found inspiration for a wall design by Burnham Design via Pinterest. After a couple of hours drafting up examples this is what I ended up with and my amazing finisher that kicks some serious butt when to town, thanks Mark...you.are.awesome.

 I'm so in love with this room!

{great room}
I decided on all vertical grain quartersawn white oak for the wood work in the home, again, since we do everything on-site in the home options are endless and you get an amazing finished product that exudes quality, finish, and fit...have I mentioned that I love what I do? The area around the fireplace and up the right hand side will be cladded in stone (which is awesome as well).

The ceilings are 11' in this section of the home, very rare for an inner city home, but it adds a lot to the space, the black patio doors at the back of the room will open up to a large patio.

{kitchen}
The doors have arrived and are waiting to be sprayed so they can be installed, appliances to come, then the rest of the tile can go in along with the wall sconces above the stained open shelves.

The island detail with the vertical grain panels and Caesarstone waterfall is stunning, akkk...I will be dreaming about this kitchen until it is done, and possibly after it is done too.

{mud room}
The rear entry on this home is going to be filled with tons of style as well, from the chevron floors to the large Hicks pendants. On the left is a small desk or command center that is nicely tucked into this space but right across form the kitchen.

{powder room & butlers pantry}
The powder room is a work in process...but I promise you this, it is going to ridiculous when the finishers are done with the wall treatment & vanity. The butlers pantry is nestled in between the front rooms with awesoemeballs wall and the killer kitchen, oh, and there is a massive pantry next to that, tons o' storage.

{laundry room & doors}
Laundry room goodness, bins built-in for dirty clothes, hanging rod above and cabinets for extra storage, across form this is the washer & dryer along with a sink and yep...more cabinets. On the right, a little glimpse of the black door goodness that is going throughout the home.

{main bath}
Subway and hexagon...need I say more?

 {basement wet bar}
I wanted to keep the basement more manly by using all wood down here, but the elements had to stay the same & consistent.

More vertical grain, Caesarstone, subway, and open shelving...

{wine room}
Rather than wasting the room under the stairs that lead to the basement we tucked in a wine room, storage is over rated...unless it is wine storage!

So there you have it, the progress of Altadore I, and to think I have an Altadore II & Altadore III that I get to work on...so.much.fun!! Hope you enjoyed and I will be sharing more as the house progress. Think lots of Visual Comfort & Arteriors goodness along with some iron & glass railings.
